When I was in college, oh so many years ago, my history professor, a retired career Navy man, referred to everyone by their last name. Thus, I was, simply “Walsh!”. He also had a habit of creating group nicknames for students he understood to be friends, so my buddies Harrington, Fitzgerald, and I became the “Irish Mafia”. I suspect he’d be in jail these days.

Do you suppose there are some professors at these schools that read these memos and say, either out loud or to themselves, for heaven’s sake, can’t i just teach mathematics (or english or physics) and call it a day?

That will be the safest thing to do, in the circumstances.

Most of my professors didn’t know my name, and never spoke to me. That was just fine by me. I was there to learn, not be babied.
