Of course Hutton was not literally “the first”—not the first famous person to have a space between her front teeth. That would be an absurd thing for me to be stating. No, it’s not what I meant.

I realize that you have a tendency to take things literally. But you also have a very unfortunate tendency to insult people while you’re taking them literally. “babes forget there was history before you were born.” No, “babes” don’t. Or perhaps some babes do, and some dudes do, but believe me, I’m aware that gap-toothed people, and even gap-toothed celebrities, existed before I was born.

I was speaking of models, by the way. That was the category this particular post of mine was about (although Madonna was in the article, for some reason, she was not only NOT “the first,” she wasn’t even a model, so she certainly was not the first model with a gap tooth). And no, I really didn’t even mean to say that I know for a fact that there was never a gap-toothed model before Lauren Hutton. I was merely trying to indicate that Hutton came before Madonna as “the original” famous 20th Century model with a gap-tooth. I don’t think there were others, although of course there might have been some I’m not aware of.

Go back and read the post. The title is “Gap-toothed models.” It starts this way:

But that photo at the end of the article is incorrect. Madonna was not the original. Lauren Hutton was.

Translated: the photo of Madonna is incorrect. Not only was she not a model at all—and the entire article, and my post, are both about models, and she is identified as the original gap-toothed star, so she’s incorrect in that way. But she was preceded by an earlier gap-toothed model, Lauren Hutton. Hutton is to the best of my knowledge the first famous gap-toothed model, although as I said earlier that might be incorrect. But the people you mention—gap-toothed celebrities and particularly actors—are not models, and they’re not the category I was referring to.

in the silent movie era they casted thsi for its appearance of idiocy in characters like step and fetchit (which makes an interesting appearnce in the first movie of the wizard of oz as he is caught stealing watermellon in the field and eating it on the spot!)
