The Latter Day Saints are probably more familiar with fasting, on New Moon, so they would understand the part about Jesus of Nazareth going off on a spiritual fasting journey once he found out certain things.

The Eastern Ascetic tradition had holy men or women, sit on top of a pillar, and just endure night and day, while fed only by what people gave them. This was the epitome of the holy ascetic tradition, which Jews and far Easterners are very familiar with.

It&#039;s not something Westerners are familiar with. If they were, they wouldn&#039;t be adopting yoga as a religion, heh.]]></description>

					<description><![CDATA[I take Pilates (both mat and Reformer/other Pil machines), work out with free weights, and do cardio (not that I look like it, but...).  I do an occasional yoga session with my Pilates instructor and have found yoga to be the toughest thing I do.

My balance is dreadful (esp due to B12 issues) and my upper leg muscles are weak (due to knee injuries), so I need a LOT of adjustments to do nearly anything.  No injuries though - I know my limits.

Yoga is HARD!]]></description>

					<description><![CDATA[I must have learned a much more benign form of yoga long ago.  I have seen video of people doing what I thought was very aggressive yoga with lots of fast motions and jerking, which is how you hurt yourself since momentum can surpass your muscle/skeletal limits.  What I learned was very slow movement into a form that made something tight, then slow breathing to stretch it further.  Safety was, pain cause an exhale which relieved the strain immediately.  

One thing about handstands, shoulder stands and such is that they bring into play lots of tiny elements needed to maintain balance.  If you haven&#039;t used those for a long time, the quick jerks that come from correcting balance can cause very nice pulled muscles and ligaments.]]></description>

					<description><![CDATA[Turns out, despite being very flexible, and the cheerleading of enthusiastic, yoga teachers, you are not supposed to &quot;work through&quot; blacking out.

Finally went to the doctor about it and was diagnosed with neurocardiogenic syncope-- failed the tilt table test. 

It is a really stupid cardiac nerve defect which causes the blood to rush out of the brain and down to the legs at inopportune moments. 

It&#039;s good to know, so it&#039;s easier to manage. Drinking Gatorade helps and beware of yoga classes!]]></description>

I will say it was about the least risky thing I&#039;ve done in the way of exercise. 

Though by the time I came to doing serious yoga classes I had already hurt myself enough times doing other things that I knew enough to be careful.
