We visited Boston about 15 years ago. I wasn’t raised on US history so it was eye-opening for me. We heard that story about the molasses and I have never forgotten it. It sounds too bizarre to be true, yet it is.

Back in the day, True, The Man’s Magazine, published this story.
They also did one on how the citizens of Charleston, just prior to firing on Ft. Sumter, tried to suborn the federal troops–the enlisted men–by throwing them parties. The True article probably ramped up the wildness, or maybe not.
So, forty years later, I read it in Catton.
Wonder how much I missed not reading that mag consistently.

Sounds like the basis of a sci-fi story, just add extraterrestrials and a brave little girl who saves the day.

Actually, thanks to the internet, the Great Molasses Flood is much more well known that you’d think. Not nearly as well know as the fact that “Northern girls will gut you” but only because that experience is much more wide-spread.

But Thompson….. ah now there’s a singer songwriter with more than one thing to say.

If some people were knocked down by a rush of air it sounds like the tank exploded under pressure. It didn’t just collapse. The tank probably had an airlock to vent fermentation gases. Maybe the simplest explanation for the disaster is a problem with the airlock.
