I surrendered the hate, but not the disrespect, distaste. Peace is not worth surrender. Compassion for the warped should not supersede justice. Personal and business associations, and preferences, should not be above what is right. I wondered though, how many who seemed to be justifying evildoers had merely surrendered to it? I have, pretty much, given up on America. Mostly because from what I can tell, America has given up on itself. I can, and will, fight. I won’t kneel. I won’t just surrender. But I also won’t go against the mob, not directly, not alone. I’ll merely slip away and let the mob eat itself. I just hope I can heal in time to sneak out the back door and let the cannibalism that is coming destroy only the cannibals… and those who have engendered the behavior. I have no interest in being mugged again, again, again. Nor can I kill that many. Nor would I. If it comes to that, this is no longer my home and yet just because I am Rome, I will not do, always, as the Romans do.

He does present an interesting perspective at times, and includes a wealth of obscure stuff – often with links – that are interesting in-and-of-themselves. Especially on rainy afternoons.

One time artfldgr included a reference to a work by C. Wright Mills. Because I wasn’t sure why he referred to Mills, I asked him why he did so. artfldgr’s response was to give a lengthy explanation about Mills, with the underlying assumption that I didn’t know jack about C. Wright Mills. I replied that I had several of his books on my shelves. Moreover, family friends had known C. Wright Mills from his grad school days, long before he was prominent in his profession. Courtesy of my family friends, by the age of 18 I had read my first C. Wright Mills book- his propaganda screed Listen Yankee in support of Fidel Castro. Which is why I don’t have a high opinion of C. Wright Mills.

From my experience in teaching at a minority and poverty school, I would say that there IS some truth to that assertion. Blacks tend to have a more confrontational, a more in-your-face kind of communication style than whites do. When many black students see the more mild mannered communication style of a white, they see this as a signal that this teacher can be played. And in my case, they were correct.

I had a problematic student whose mother was a teacher’s aide in another school. He once made the remark that his mother was a lot harder on problem students than I was.

There was pressure from the principal to pass as many students as possible, but from my experience, students tend to work and behave better when they get at least one failing grade. If I had to do it over again, I would have handed out more failing grades in the beginning of the year. Like the old line about the farmer hitting a mule on the side of the head to get its attention. No, I am not advocating actual physical abuse.]

This does not mean that all black teachers succeed with black/minority students with a confrontational style. A teacher on my team had nearly 40 years of teaching experience. She was mild-mannered, but she knew which buttons to push to make her students behave.

Why not, as I have said several times, just offer your information without the insults and the assumptions about what people care about and don’t care about, and know and don’t know?
